Abstract

This collection contains newspaper clippings, magazines, books, and an SGA resolution plaque related to Heather Whitestone McCallum (b. 1973), a JSU student in the 1990s who became Miss Jacksonville State University, Miss Alabama, and finally Miss America 1995. Whitestone, who lost the majority of her hearing after suffering an ear infection at the age of 18 months, was the first deaf person to win the Miss America pageant. She later served on the National Council on Disability and the Advisory Council on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders for the National Institutes of Health.
