Photo circa 1930s. A street corner and buildings on N. Main Street in Culpeper, Virginia. The building at right is painted with a "Mayflower Grill" sign. It was the Virginia House Hotel, a popular gathering place for soldiers throughout the Civil War. The porches were later enclosed on the building. The Virginia House Hotel stood directly across the street from the home of Henry Shackelford, the home where Major John Pelham was taken by horse after a piece of shrapnel struck him during the Battle of Kelly's Ford. John Pelham passed away in the Shackelford house on March 17, 1863.
