Lyric Theatre

Jax State Lyric Theatre is a nonprofit program, run through the JSU Foundation and David L. Walters Department of Music.

Once known as Jacksonville Opera Theatre (2003-2023), Jax State Lyric Theatre began in the spring of the 2003-2004 school year. At the time, the residents of Jacksonville, Alabama had not seen an opera in their performance spaces for over 15 years. The overwhelming response from the audience allowed opera to return to Jacksonville.

Rebranded as Jax State Lyric Theatre (JLT) in 2024, Lyric Theatre presents professionally staged productions featuring musical talent from the David L. Walters Department of Music. All its productions are conducted, directed, and designed by faculty and staff, with students participating and performing in productions. The audience has expanded from an initial 150 patrons to over 3,000.
