The Black Student Union sponsored a Beauty and the Beast contest at Jacksonville State University November 23, 1976 in the Leone Cole Auditorium. Winners of the this contest were Bessie Lue Avery (beauty sponsored by Gwen Yelder) and Wayne Johnson (the beast sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi).
