LTC George Armstrong Custer led his 7th Calvary regiment in the June 25-26, 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn where they were defeated and he was killed by Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. (circa April 1876, when Custer sat for photos taken by William R. Howell in New York City)
