Abstract
This collection is comprised of cartoons drawn by sports cartoonist Vaughn Stewart (1919-1992). Stewart attended Anniston High School, where he played football, baseball, and basketball in the late 1930s. He went on to play football for the University of Alabama in the 1940s before being drafted into the US Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge, Stewart played two seasons of professional football with the Chicago Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Upon his retirement from football, Stewart became a sports cartoonist for newspapers such as The Huntsville Times and The Montgomery Advertiser. Stewart is buried in Highland Cemetery, Anniston, Alabama.
Though Stewart was known for his sports cartoons, the illustrations in this collection feature primarily local historical topics, such as “The Gallant Pelham,” Civil War battles, and Calhoun County/Anniston historical events/personalities.
