Robert L. Smith, commander of the Jacksonville American Legion Post 57, awarded the North Alabama winner of the Legion essay contest in 1954. A $50 check was presented to Ms. Gary Luttrell for her essay titled, "The People's Constitution--Ours to Defend." Shown in attendance were J.A. Roberts, Harold Lecroy, Walter Kerr, Clifford Norton, C.W. Perry, Jr., Harold Askew, E.J. Campoux, and Homer Barnwell.
