The Calhoun Literary Society was organized at the State Normal School in 1884, named for South Carolina senator John C. Calhoun. Shown is "Calhoun Literary Society 1919-20 Motto: Be thou a man." Members not pictured on collage were E.G. Samuels, Harlan Martin, M.M. Woodham, C.P. Nelson, W.B. Hardegree, W.P. Pickard, Hugh Toland, Austin Meadows.
