Description
Photo circa after 1926 (monument's erection date). A small, possibly marble, obelisk mounted on a block of stone taken from the Kelly's Ford battlefield near the spot where John Pelham fell is shown surrounded by a picket fence. This is the monument to Major John Pelham in Culpeper County, Virginia, on the old Rt. 60. It was placed near where the Battle of Kelly's Ford took place in 1863. The plaque attached to the fence reads, "Property Pelham Chapter U.D.C. Birmingham, Ala." The front of the monument reads, "In memory of Major John Pelham, Born Sept 7, 1839 in Calhoun Co. ALA. Mortally wounded March 17, 1863 near Kellys Ford VA." [donated by Laura W. Henry]
