Description
Miss Nackie Jirels's first grade class is pictured outside "The Barn" (old Anniston High School). Jirels was a lifelong educator. She earned her B.A. in Education at Jacksonville Normal School (now Jacksonville State University; she is listed as a senior in the 1932 yearbook) and her M.A. in Education at the University of Alabama. She taught in the Anniston City and Calhoun County school systems. She was a first grade teacher at the Sixth Ward and Woodstock schools in Anniston, and was principal and teacher at Blue Mountain Elementary School from 1924 to her retirement in 1962. Following her retirement from Blue Mountain, she taught at the Episcopal Day School from 1962 to about 1971 when she retired again. She continued as a tutor at the Episcopal Day School even after her official retirement.
