Entering freshmen students at Jacksonville State Teachers College were referred to as "rats." All received hats to wear to signify to upperclassmen that they are "rats," or freshmen. Shown a group of freshmen students are seated in chairs wearing rat hats, costumes, and have "rat" written across their forehead.
