Joan Smithey was a student at Jacksonville State College (now Jacksonville State University). In 1962-1963 she was a senior majoring in Elementary Education. During her time in college she was Student Government Association SGA Secretary, Freshman Class Treasurer, Sophomore Reporter, Mimosa Staff, Westminster Fellowship Vice President, Counselor, Kappa Delta Epsilon, Delta Omicron, Miss Mimosa Candidate and Top Ten, Junior Class Favorite, and Gem of the Hills. (circa 1963)
