Selected by the Jacksonville State University publicity department, Gems of the Hills were chosen for their attractiveness, poise, and charm. Alice Deakins was chosen as a Gem of the Hills in October 1961. A freshman from Fairfield, she is shown outside on campus in front of Bibb Graves Hall watching traffic. (circa October 2, 1961)
