Description
The State Normal School was established on February 22, 1883 as Gov. Edward O'Neal signed into law a bill. In 1899, after the county seat moved to Anniston, the State Normal School moved to the former Courthouse Building, shown left, until the school outgrew it. Alleghany (Iron Queen) Hotel was first operated as a hotel and later rented as a dormitory or boarding house to the State Normal School, shown right. In the early 1900s the name of the building changed to Hotel Pelman. In 1917 it was destroyed by a fire. (circa 1901)
