Description

In 1934 or 1935 a rumor began to circulate that Profile Mill president William Greenleaf would shut off the water supply to the mill village houses. Shown are the group of men confronting Jacksonville mayor Charles Stephens, standing far right wearing suit, at the big springs regarding the rumors. All the men hold a type of ax handle except Guy W. Key, left center with left hand on hip, who holds a noose. The group of men hanged William Greenleaf in effigy during the meeting. Identified men present, in no order, were Columbus McColloum, Jack Harris, Guy "Boss" Hammett, Wence Snider, Roy Watts, Mr. Hudgens, Viles Davis, Joe Marin, John Medley, Matthew Turner, Luke Key, Eli Huidgens, Ardell White, Kermit Evans, Milas Davis, Bill Murray, John Garmon, Wilton Bedwell, Earl Hendrix, Forney Davis, Early Poole, Doug Smith, Buster Webb, Dewey Garmon, I.G.
