Selected by the Jacksonville State University publicity department, Gems of the Hills were chosen for their attractiveness, poise, and charm. Mary Jane Baker was chosen as a Gem of the Hills in 1964. Celebrating National Dairy Month dressed as a milk maid, she stands holding a small stool in one hand and a metal bucket in her other hand wearing an apron around her waist.
