In 1999, a new University Photographer switched the Office of Photographic Services from film to digital photography. He began consideration of how to preserve the work of former University Photographers, which existed in the form of tens of thousands of negatives in a variety of formats, housed in filing cabinets. Many of the earliest negatives were in poor condition and deteriorating, and would soon be completely unsalvageable. The Office of Photographic Services collaborated with the Library to transfer the negatives and digitization equipment to the Library so that it could digitize and provide access to these important historical images. The project is ongoing, and new images are added on a regular basis.
