The State Normal School was established on February 22, 1883 as Gov. Edward O'Neal signed into law a bill. James Gazaway Ryals, Jr. was elected as the first president in 1883. He graduated from Mercer University with distinctive honors in 1877. Photo identification by Alta Millican. (circa 1883)
