William David Staples, Jr. (1912-1992) was a native of Anniston, Alabama and longtime resident of Jacksonville, Alabama. He attended the United States Naval Institute in Maryland and served in the US Navy and Navy Reserves. He worked as a veterinarian in Mississippi and Jacksonville, Alabama and later as a biology professor at Jacksonville State Teachers College (later Jacksonville State University). He attended the Alabama Military Institute, graduating in 1929. He also attended Marion Military Institute.
